My wife was born in China during the cultural revolution, and her earliest baby picture shows her wearing a Mao button. Mao created a living hell in China that still haunts China today. Fortunately my wife's family was able to get to Hong Kong when she was about 6... although how they pulled that off has never been made clear to me. :)
